The nonprofit sector is growing at a faster rate than ever. There are now more than 1.4 million registered nonprofits in the United States. These organizations employ more than 12.9 million people, along with the equivalent of 4.7 million full-time volunteers. Together, they generate annual revenue of approximately $1.6 trillion dollars by some estimates, the eighth largest economy in the world.
Nonprofit organizations leadership needs are increasing as fast as if not faster than the sector itself. Who are the next generation of nonprofit sector leaders, and how will they prepare for the challenges of leading the nonprofit organization of the future?
American Humanics (AH) is a national alliance that brings together nonprofit organizations, universities, and community partners to educate, prepare, and certify future nonprofit sector leaders. The AH program is offered on seventy-five U.S. college campuses. Students pursuing the American Humanics certificate on these campuses benefit from being part of a network of experts with national perspectives on workforce issues unique to the nonprofit sector.
The annual AH Management/Leadership Institute (AHMI) convenes AH students, alumni, and faculty from across the country to participate in three days of workshops, plenary sessions, case studies, professional development, and keynote addresses by nationally recognized experts in nonprofit sector management and leadership. AHMI includes nonprofit sector placement services, as well as workshops for office of career services professionals to expand their knowledge and expertise in nonprofit sector employment.
AH initiated the Nonprofit Sector Workforce Coalition in 2006 as part of its Initiative for Nonprofit Sector Careers. The coalition is a growing alliance of academic institutions, foundations, corporations, and more than fifty national nonprofit organizations working collaboratively to address the most pressing issues related to establishing the next generation of nonprofit sector professionals. Current coalition strategies address workforce diversity, the impact of student debt on nonprofit sector internships and young professionals career choices, and a national campaign to promote nonprofit sector careers.
As more students come to college with the desire to make a difference, American Humanics is the only national organization addressing the growing need for dedicated and experienced entry-level professional employees to lead and manage nonprofit organizations. In the United States, 87 percent of all undergraduate nonprofit studies, courses, and programs are offered through AH-affiliated universities. These programs also are accessed by young professionals returning to college with the goal of switching to the nonprofit sector from their current line of work.
The nonprofit sector is clearly a growth industry that offers promising careers to individuals committed to community service.
